Measuring up

meas·ure·ment
/ˈmeZHərmənt/
"The size, length, or amount of something as defined by measuring."

We're human. We measure our talents, achievements, goals by persons that surround us, whether it's a conscious or unconscious choice. People can become the yardstick by which everything we strive to accomplish is calculated. I'm guilty as I've done this myself. To be honest, it's not realistic to measure yourself against others.

Why? Because we "grow" at differing paces. The early-bloomers come out of the proverbial "starting gate" ready to shine, their measurements are mighty. Most everyone else it takes practice, hard work, and long hours of studying to approach the gate that leads to new endeavors, and the growth can be inches at a time.

Genesis 1:2 " The earth brought forth vegetation, plants yielding seed according to their own kinds, and trees bearing fruit in which is their seed, each according to its kind. And God saw that it was good."

Our progress is akin to a seed. Everything that shapes us is our roots, it's who we are. Through careful cultivating, we then can be who the Lord created. Each different, unique, special one of us. There's not a way to measure against another when you were created to be you, and only you.

I hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving, filled with joy and fun times. . . And don't forget to put away your yardstick, I'm leaving mine in the garage, where it belongs.

What is something you've done recently that helps you grow toward a goal or opportunity?

  1. You are so right in this. Measuring against others can be disappointing, too. Going to writers' conferences for the first time has helped me take a step in making decisions. Thanks for this good post Stacy!
