An interview with Author Sharee Stover and her newest novel, Silent Night Suspect

Hello, Sharee! Welcome back! We’re happy to have you with us today.

Stacy, thank you so much for having me!

Congratulations on your new novel, Silent Night Suspect. Tell us about it, and how you came up with the idea for this exciting novel.

Silent Night Suspect is my second Love Inspired Suspense book and I’m super excited for its release. The story is based around a reunion relationship between widow, Asia Stratton and Nebraska state trooper, Slade Jackson. Although Slade is imaginary, the State Patrol is a group near and dear to my heart because my husband is a State Trooper. I love the themes of second chances and forgiveness woven in their story.
Here's the official back cover blurb:
Suspected of a crime she knows she didn’t commit…

All she wants for Christmas is to remember.

Blood on her blouse. A gun in her hand. A cartel leader’s dead body in front of her. Widow Asia Stratton can’t remember what happened—just that she’s been framed. The only way to prove her innocence is to work with her ex-sweetheart, Nebraska state trooper Slade Jackson. But can they clear her name before this Christmas turns even deadlier?
The inspiration came while I was watching a television program featuring a police officer who was a recovering drug addict. He talked about his battles to uphold the law while struggling with his addiction and the effects it had on his family. I was touched by his authentic and vulnerable openness in sharing his story. It sparked my imagination and the backstory for Silent Night Suspect developed.

What influences you as a romantic suspense writer? Are there particular authors or movies which spurred on your love of writing?

Everything influences me! I’m a people watcher so sometimes a perfect stranger can inspire a character. I also love watching crime, forensic, and medical shows. It’s generally the crime that sparks a story in my mind.
Which authors are you reading now?

I’m always reading and listening to several books at a time. Right now, I’m reading Mary Connealy’s Aiming for Love. She has the best sense of humor and I love her books! I’m listening to Steven James Synapse and for non-fiction, Listening to the Language of the Bible by Lois Tverberg.

Do any real-life settings, persons, make an appearance in your novel?

Definitely! The story begins in a rundown trailer. I got that idea while I was out driving one afternoon in the country and passed a trailer home, pretty much like the one described at the beginning of the book. Asia and Slade also travel to the town of Norfolk and the YMCA there and roam the roads of northeastern Nebraska.

Can you give us the first page from Silent Night Suspect?

Asia Stratton’s gaze remained transfixed on the lifeless eyes staring back at her. Dark pools— so black they appeared to be bottomless holes— silently demanded an explanation for the single bullet wound to the center of the man’s forehead.
An explanation she couldn’t provide.
“Asia, drop the gun. Put your hands up,” a male voice ordered.
She jerked at the mention of her name and squinted against the blinding light veiling the stranger in the doorway. Darkness had fallen, and Nebraska’s icy winter wind blasted through the unfamiliar living room.
The dead man’s silent inquisition beckoned, and Asia reverted her attention to him.
“I said, drop the gun,” the intruder repeated.
His words trickled through the fog in her brain and she gasped at the Glock gripped in her palm. Asia released her hold, and the weapon toppled from her shaking hands onto the dirty carpet. She lifted her arms in obedience, sending a jolt of pain radiating up her shoulder. She cried out, then caught sight of the crimson stain marring her white blouse.
“Keep your hands up! Don’t make any sudden moves.” In her peripheral, she saw the man enter, taking cautious, steady steps, gun trained on her.

Oh, this sounds so good, Sharee! What advice would you give new writers?

Never give up. Never give in (to doubt and condemnation). Writing is hard and there are days when you’ll want to throw in the keyboard. Don’t! Take a break then keep going. You cannot edit a blank page so even if it’s terrible, awful writing, it’s still editable words.

Do you have a fun fact you’d like to share?

I am a two-time cornea transplant patient and super grateful for my vision every single day!

You are amazing, Sharee. What a gift to receive. Very happy for you! Can you tell us what’s on the horizon as far as new novels for you?

I am working on the second book of my next Love Inspired Suspense series and that first book, Untraceable Evidence, releases May 2020.

We'll be looking for your next novel in 2020. Congratulations and thank you, Sharee for visiting again, we’re excited to read your new novel and wish you the best with it.

Thanks so much for having me, Stacy! I hope you enjoy Slade and Asia’s story 😊. You're welcome, Sharee. I absolutely loved it!
