A Season for Grace Countdown Week Post #7

Ode to a Wet White Shirt

by Beth Collins

Mr. Darcy's smoldering gaze beckoned from the six-tape set

The 1995 BBC production of Pride and Prejudice, starring Colin Firth as the handsome but haughty Mr. Darcy, had a strong impact on Stacy and me. We loved watching (and rewatching) the six-part drama, especially Episode 4, which included the infamous “wet white shirt” scene. Stacy was a wife and mother, and I was dating my future husband, but we both fell in love with Colin Firth’s Mr. Darcy. I even named one of my twin sons after him. (At least I chose “Colin” and not “Firth”!)

Apparently, we weren’t the only ones transfixed by his transparent top. Lyme Park, the beautiful manor house that served as Pemberley in the show, erected a 12-foot statue of Mr. Darcy in his wet white shirt in 2013 to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the novel’s publication.

And the mystique lingers today. Season 2 of Netflix’s popular series Bridgerton paid homage to the dripping Mr. Darcy when eldest son Anthony tumbled into a lake wearing a similarly see-through white shirt. So intense is the desire for this damp garment that a buyer recently paid $32,000 at a charity auction for it. The auction was covered by major media outlets across the globe.
